An Early Start
I grew up Lorraine Serravillo in Astoria, New York, and am a proud product of New York City Public Schools. I attended the High School of Music and Art as a voice major. Thanks to my very talented classmate Lloyd Green ‘71, you can access my audition story here.
In 2016, my husband and daughters gifted a nameplate in my honor on a seat in the new auditorium at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Hunter College, I majored in English and minored in Philosophy. My first book review was published in 1978 while I was at graduate student and teaching assistant in Northeastern University’s Master of Arts in English program with a focus on study in the fields of British and American literature.
While raising my two young daughters, I was a freelance copy-editor for non-fiction titles for Wesleyan University Press and manuscript textbooks for the College Division of D.C. Heath and Company, Inc. I also wrote teacher’s pages and annotated notes for an 11th grade American literature textbook for Prentice Hall Inc.
In 1989, after our family moved to Connecticut, I began working as a writer in the Communications Department at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford where I was editor of the award-winning Choate Rosemary Hall Alumni Bulletin for 17 years until my retirement in 2020.
